  4.   This file contains important information about Virtual Snooker.

  6.                    ======================================
  7.                         How To Use This Patch (v.1.1)
  8.                    ======================================
  9.   The files contained in this patch will replace the files that shipped
  10.   in Version 1.0 of Virtual Snooker.
  11.   After unzipping the patch, copy these files into the directory where
  12.   you installed Virtual Snooker.  If you are unsure where Virtual Snooker
  13.   was installed, check in \INTRPLAY\VSNOOKER.  
  14.   DOS:
  15.            COPY SNOOKER.EXE C:\INTRPLAY\VSNOOKER
  16.            COPY MODEM.INI C:\INTRPLAY\VSNOOKER
  17.            COPY README.TXT C:\INTRPLAY\VSNOOKER
  18.   The computer will ask you if you wish to overwrite the existing files,
  19.   select Yes.
  20.  
  21.   WINDOWS:
  22.   Drag the files (SNOOKER.EXE, MODEM.INI, and README.TXT) into the folder
  23.   where Virtual Snooker was installed.  Windows will ask you if you wish
  24.   to replace the existing files with the new ones.  Click on yes.
  25.  
  26.   After that, you are ready to play Snooker again.  If everything went
  27.   correctly, you will not have to reconfigure the game, you should be able
  28.   to start playing again immediately.
  29.  
  30.   Changes to Version 1.1
  31.   - A rules violation occuring when a color was potted during a shot
  32.     in which the cue went in/off was addressed.  In this situation the
  33.     ball was not respotted.  This has been fixed, the ball will now
  34.     be spotted back on the table.
  35.   - The Windows Setup program was revised to allow setup to all Windows
  36.     users.
  37.   - Windows Setup now offers an Uninstall option as well.
  38.   - A baud rate line has been added to the MODEM.INI file to allow users
  39.     to manually adjust the data rate of their modem.  Note that this rate
  40.     is a maximum and your modem may adjust its rate down to compensate for
  41.     slower modems.
  42.   - The crash or hang occuring when a replay was called after the last
  43.     ball on the table was hit in has been fixed.

  53.             Configuring Virtual Snooker 
  54.            ======================================
  55.   From DOS: 
  56.   Place the Virtual Snooker CD into your CD-ROM drive.  From 
  57.   the command prompt, type d:INSTALL (where d: is the drive letter of your
  58.   CD-ROM drive).  Follow the instructions to install Virtual Snooker to 
  59.   your hard drive.
  60.   When the game is finished installing, type SNOOKER to play.  Note: you 
  61.   must have the Virtual Snooker CD in your CD-ROM drive to play.

  63.   From Windows: 
  64.   Insert the Virtual Snooker CD into your CD-ROM drive.
  65.   Select Run from your Start Menu (Win95) or your File Menu (Windows 3.xx).  
  66.   Type d:\SETUP (where d: is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.  
  67.   Follow the instructions to install Virtual Snooker.
  68.   When the game is finished installing, double click the Snooker Icon to
  69.   play the game.  Note: you must have Virtual Snooker CD in your
  70.   CD-ROM drive to play.

  72.   The first time you run the game, a configuration program will allow you 
  73.   to set up your display and sound options.  Just follow the on-screen 
  74.   instructions to set up your video driver, sound card, and mouse (if 
  75.   necessary).

  78.   Virtual Snooker item from the Main Menu.

  106.   Virtual Snooker does not require a memory manager, but should
  107.   run ok with all of them in most configurations.
  108.  
  109.   You may have problems running Virtual Snooker with QEMM.
  110.   To disable QEMM, push ALT while the system is booting.
  111.

  113.                  Sound Cards
  114.               ========================
  115.   Virtual Snooker only uses Sound Blaster digitized sound for 
  116.   effects during the game.  If you have a different sound card, make sure
  117.   that its Sound Blaster emulation is turned on.  Also, make sure that
  118.   the BLASTER environment variable contains the correct settings.  See
  119.   your sound card's installation procedures for more information.
  120.

  122.                 Video Drivers
  123.               ========================
  124.   Virtual Snooker can be run at higher resolutions with the 3DVX 
  125.   video drivers. The drivers are graphics chip specific.  
  126.  
  127.   You should choose the driver which provides you with the highest 
  128.   resolution possible and still maintains a rapid update rate. You
  129.   can turn off the room background or make the window smaller to increase 
  130.   the frame rate. Higher resolution drivers require more video memory. 
  131.   See the Memory Requirements section below. Current revisions of drivers 
  132.   do not check how much memory is on the card; so if it doesn't work, try 
  133.   a lower resolution.
  134.  
  135.   If you don't know what chip is on your video card, try using 
  136.   auto-detection in the config program.  This program is not 
  137.   guaranteed to properly identify all chips. If you can't 
  138.   run with the driver selected by auto-detection, try pulling
  139.   out your video card and looking for a name and ID on the
  140.   graphics chip. The graphics chip will usually be the largest
  141.   chip on the board.
  142.  
  143.   If a chip specific driver does not work, try the VESA Planar Multi Page 
  144.   driver. If that does not work, use the VESA Linear Single Page driver.
  145.   If all else fails, use the VGA driver.
  146.  
  147.   Video memory requirements for drivers:

  149.      640x480 3DVX chip specific drivers             1 MB

  156.   New drivers will be made available on the Interplay BBS (see below).

  158.   There are hardware bugs in some early versions of the S3801/805 chipsets.
  159.   You may see pixels reversed in columns on the screen.  The accelerator
  160.   may not work on some chips.  There is no fix for these bugs.
  161.  
  162.   The ET4000/W32 Accelerated chip will not work under WINDOWS.  If you 
  163.   have a video card with this chip use the non-accelerated driver for Windows.
  164.  
  165.   Note that there is a different driver for the ET4000/W32P version of the
  166.   chip. The ET4000/W32 driver will not work for the P version.

  168.   If there isn't a driver for your board, let us know by posting a message
  169.   on the Interplay BBS.  If we get a sufficient number of requests for a
  170.   chip, we'll try to write a driver for it.  ISA graphics boards will not
  171.   be supported because they lack the necessary performance at high 
  172.   resolution.

  174.   The movie player uses a VESA mode.  If you can't play movies and get a
  175.   message that the graphics mode can't be set, try installing a VESA
  176.   driver.

  179.                 Modem Play
  180.               ========================
  181.   The Virtual Snooker Demo supports two players over a telephone line via
  182.   modem.  Virtual Snooker Demo comes with a file that specifies how to
  183.   initialize your modem for gameplay.  If you have problems getting your
  184.   modem to connect, you can edit the MODEM.INI file in the Virtual Snooker
  185.   directory.  Use your favorite text editor (NOTEPAD in Windows, or EDIT
  186.   in DOS for instance) and change the initialization string.  Here are a few
  187.   strings that have proved helpful:

  189.   "AT&F &D2 &C1 S0=0"  - This works best with USRobotics Sportster 28.8
  190.              and Multitech modems.
  191.   "AT&F"
  192.   "AT&F1"
  193.

  198.                Known Windows Problems
  199.                ======================
  200.   The ET4000/W32 Accelerated Chipset will not work under WINDOWS.  If you
  201.   have a card with this chipset, use the non-accelerated driver if you are
  202.   running under Windows.

  204.   Some older Sound Blaster and Media Vision cards will not function under
  205.   WINDOWS.  If you're having problems getting the sound to work while
  206.   playing from WINDOWS, and are getting a "sound device in use message",
  207.   close any application that may be using sound.  If you still get the
  208.   message, the problem is a sound driver bug.  You can probably download an
  209.   updated sound driver from your board manufacturer.  Creative Labs has a
  210.   new driver for older Sound Blaster cards.
  211.  
  212.   Selecting Sound Blaster sound when configuring Virtual Snooker under
  213.   Windows may cause the movie player to hang.  If you configure Virtual
  214.   Snooker in Windows and select Sound Blaster, restart Windows before
  215.   playing any movies.  You must hit ESC to bypass the movies at the start
  216.   of Virtual Snooker.

  218.   Some Windows users may experience difficulties switching between
  219.   Snooker and other applications.  The Virtual Snooker Demo will often
  220.   experience video problems or in some cases cannot be restored.

  222.   In some cases the Autodetect may not detect the video drivers correctly
  223.   in Windows or in Windows 95.  If this happens try using the 640 X 480
  224.   VESA Single Page driver.
